Fall Fashion Trends: A Chat with Elaine Turner!

Fall is here! My favorite season has finally arrived, and I could not be more excited. Every year, I eagerly await the changing of leaves, cool fronts, cozy interiors (my house is already decked out in gourd décor!) and new styles. While I love cute booties and comfy cashmere, I am certainly no expert in the fashion department, and I typically let my fall style come out in my interior designs, rather than my wardrobe.

Luckily, I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Houston’s own “handbag queen,” , about fall fashion trends, and she was kind enough to give me the scoop on what’s hot this season. We had a fabulous time swapping knowledge over a glass (or two) of wine at , and I learned so much about fall styles, Elaine’s (impressive) entrepreneurial journey and just how much we have in common (Elaine is also a mother of two and runs her company with her husband, Jim)! Sound familiar?

Needless to say, I am very excited to share all of the fashion-forward insight I learned during our happy hour. Read on for all of the details about Elaine’s amazing new fall collection, her take on white after Labor Day, and some inspirational advice from a lady who knows a thing or two about turning dreams into reality!

Tour My New Home!

Okay, so I don’t technically have a new home, but with all of the renovations I completed recently, it kind of feels like I do!  It really is amazing what a few small projects can do to transform a home, and I’m so excited to share the results of the recent facelift I gave to my own historic Houston bungalow.

Like many of my ideas, the project started with the small goal of repainting the front door, and quickly snowballed into “just a few more projects.” Fast-forward a couple months and we now have a shiny new front door, an updated entryway, fab new built-ins in the girls’ playroom and master bedroom, and a few more fun improvements that make life just a little easier.

Of course, the updates didn’t happen overnight (or without a few minor meltdowns), but I absolutely LOVE how everything turned out! Read on to get a tour of my “new home.”

Perfecting Your Home Office

I have noticed that more and more floor plans include a home office or study. In fact, home offices now seem to come standard in the majority of new homes- great news for remote workers and entrepreneurs like myself. It’s even better news for an interior designer who LOVES arranging a new space for fab and functional efficiency (me, again!).

A desk, plenty of shelving and extra storage are no-brainers when designing a study, but creating a space that ignites inspiration and enthusiasm takes lots of planning. Blending business necessities with a homey influence can get tricky since most pieces have either the style of a home or of an office. While the challenge can be difficult, it’s definitely not impossible!

Here are my tips to turning a home office into a practical and personalized workspace.

Children’s Bathrooms: A Balancing Act

Flashy shower curtains, animal-print towel mats and, of course, piles of bath time toys, can quickly create a recipe for sensory overload in children’s bathrooms. As a mother of two energetic twin girls, I completely understand the delicate balancing act required to design a playful, kid-friendly bathroom that won’t offend your adult senses!

For my clients with kiddos of their own, I encourage spending extra time on the interior detailing of the space just as you would any other room in the house. Since children’s bathrooms are typically smaller spaces, I also tend to focus on details and fab hues rather than statement pieces to add the finishing touches to a design.

For all of the moms and dads out there attempting to pull off a fun, yet adult-friendly, bathroom for the kids, here are some of my favorite children’s bathrooms that and I have created over the years.

Full disclosure: I am certainly not an expert chef… Honestly, cooking kind of freaks me out! That said, what I lack in culinary know-how, I make up for in my love for designing the perfect spaces for others to create delicious masterpieces! In my classically current designs, I love creating a space where laughter and memories happen. From bubbly brunches to Sunday dinners, weekend celebrations and even homework time, the kitchen easily becomes one of the most central places to gather in a home – making it one of the most important spaces.

By Tara Scott-Johnson,

No matter the size of your home, clutter can quickly consume your space and leave you feeling a little claustrophobic. Out of necessity, and small spaces dwellers have learned how to rid themselves of unnecessary clutter. Let’s take our from the folks that know square footage comes at a premium and every inch of space should be utilized in a creative way – the professional organizer.

The professional organizer has mastered the art of decluttering homes with this simple process. Starting with three boxes marked SAVE, DONATE, and TRASH, go through each room meticulously and purge the space. The goal is to have less items in the SAVE box once the purging process is complete. This process not only declutters your space, it declutters your soul.

The -based Professional Organizer, , tells Chron, “ is your friend!” Reeves stocks his own home with boxes, trays, and other receptacles to hold and store just about everything. Trend Watch: Boho Chic

First, the truth: I hesitate to comment very often on interior design trends. While I love the newest of the new, my classically current design philosophy shies away from incorporating “trendy” pieces into my interiors simply for trend’s sake.  Above all, interiors should be timeless, fine, comfortable, and a representation of the real you! For many reasons, I abhor disposable design and never purchase an item for myself that I don’t absolutely love and see being part of my life forever. All that said, there is one look that is currently trending that I am totally over the top about right now: Boho Chic.

This look is a natural progression of the Scandinavian Modern look that was all the rage last year and is still super hot. I have my eye on Boho right now because I am working on a fabulous interior design project in Houston’s Highland Village neighborhood. Our client loves contemporary style and asked us to soften the space with the natural, handmade elements of which the Boho look is known. Alongside the uber-talented Dbh-biz.info designers, , principal designer, and , interior designer, I have collected the BEST of the Boho Chic trend.

These are pieces that are bench-made by artisans, lovingly and thoughtfully crafted, and will have longevity and relevance long after this look reaches a fever pitch.
