Key Features to a Moroccan Room

I began my career designing destination interiors and often draw design inspiration from cities and cultures around the world. Because of my severe case of wanderlust, I am always thrilled when the opportunity comes along to create destination-inspired interiors for my clients.

Blending striking pops of color into interiors and experimenting with fun and unique patterns are staples of my Classically Current design philosophy so I was very excited when I received a request from a client to incorporate a Moroccan-inspired theme throughout the home.

When designing destination-inspired interiors, the first order of business is to gain a general foundation of the culture’s influences and unique characteristics. Once the research is finished, you can then begin to thread these particular influences into the design to create an authentic cultural representation throughout the interior. Not to say liberties aren’t taken- they are!-but it is always good to have an understanding of the cultural vernacular.

For example, Morocco’s bold colors, lantern lighting, and distinctive textures are easily recognizable, and I absolutely loved drawing on inspiration from to create the fun, vibrant designs for my client’s home.

Here are some of the key characteristics to keep in mind when incorporating Moroccan style into a design!

Fabulous Summer Patios

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, I find myself surrounded by summer design in many aspects of my day-to-day life. In the studio, I’m surrounded by fun, bold colors and prints as I create destination interiors for many of my clients during this time of year. Outside of the office, I love to relax with my friends at a patio dinner party or plan outdoor adventures with my daughters, Liv and Ryan. No matter what I’m doing, summer styles and activities are in no short supply, and this sunny season requires that we bring interior design outdoors!

If you plan to soak up the sun with loved ones or host a low key barbecue outdoors, consider these tips to make your guests feel the warm welcome of your outdoor designs.

How It’s Made: Vetrazzo Counters

When it comes to creating interiors that are equal parts luxurious and livable, I am always on the lookout for design houses that create gorgeous, yet durable, products. One vendor I can consistently count on to produce well-made, unique products is Vetrazzo: maker of one-of-a-kind glass countertops and surfaces. I have become a huge fan of Vetrazzo’s work over the years and have featured its countertops in some of my favorite interiors. I was thrilled when I received an invitation to the company’s headquarters in Georgia for an inside look at the manufacturing facilities.

I love to see how things are made especially so I fully understand what I am specifying for our clients and also so I can relate the story of where these materials come from first hand. The gracious design team at Vetrazzo, helmed by Maitena Labourdette (Process Engineer) and Alejandro Walters (Brand Manager) welcomed Michael and me for an all access tour. Learning about the process by which recycled glass becomes a new product from beginning to end was inspiring!

Here is a peek into our trip to Vetrazzo’s Tate, Georgia, facility (of course, full safety gear was required):

Summer Destination Inspiration: Carmel-by-the-Sea

Traveling is one of my favorite pastimes.  I take every chance I get to explore new places and I often find myself daydreaming of the vacation spots that I’ve either visited in the past or hope to in the future. Of course, this daydreaming quickly turns into and that’s what I truly relish about travel!

In the spirit of the summer travel season, I decided to pull interior design inspiration from some of my favorite vacation destinations to create style boards that reflect the qualities of these amazing places!

First up, the charming beach town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. As the temperatures quickly rise in Houston, my mind often drifts to Carmel’s sandy beaches and cool blue oceans. In a town this idyllic, there is far too much inspiration for one board so all of my ideas became two separate projects, each with their own unique style and highlighting my favorite aspects of this quaint vacation spot!

Vibrant and Fun

I gravitated toward lighter and brighter hues for this theme and turned my Classically Current style into a timeless interior fit for any ocean-front property. These colors work well to create a fun space for entertaining guests inside and outdoors. Because of the gorgeous climate, most residents of Carmel live inside and out year round!

Out of the Box Wallcoverings

As I create design boards and sketches for my clients, I always strive to use every square inch of a room to its full potential. Sometimes, the design requires more emphasis on smaller details like a unique side table, the perfect floral arrangement or delicate trim along accent pillows. Other times, the design may call for more striking and lavish features like a bold that takes center stage or, in this case, a fab wallcovering to clothe an entire room with stunning visual appeal.

Wallcoverings have become a favorite design tool of mine because of the opportunities they provide to really make an impactful statement in the overall design of a room. Depending on the tone my client wants to achieve, I tend to opt for wallcoverings that bring bold, textured or elegant elements to my classically current interior designs. Whether dressing up a chic bathroom or incorporating a classic design into a master bedroom, I love the opportunities to get creative with the four walls of a room.

Here are some of my favorite ways to think out of the box about wallcoverings!

Introducing Beacon Hill’s Animale Collection!

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with fabric to create striking showroom designs featuring Beacon Hill’s stunning new spring Animale Fabric collection. I loved that Beacon Hill sought out a local Houston interior designer (me!) to help debut the new collection. I was honored to be included and thrilled at the challenge of designing vignettes to showcase this fashion-forward collection.

Using the new line of fabrics and Robert Allen furniture pieces, I gathered inspiration from various natural elements to design several vignettes that blended with my Classically Current style. Today, I’m excited to show you the finished products!

Plush Blush

It’s hard to believe that we are already a week into May, but before we make the official transition from spring to summer, I want to give recognition to a gorgeous springtime hue that has gained popularity in the interior design world recently and continues to make its way into my classically current designs. That’s right, I’m talking about blush.

I personally love to pair this soft, pale pink shade with gold or grey accents to bring an elegant, feminine touch to the interior design of a space. Whether in the form of pillows, furniture pieces and everything in between, including this subtle hue into a room’s design can have a big impact on the space and may just be the perfect addition to complete your look! Here are some examples of how I’ve blended blush into my interiors, and additional pieces I can’t wait to incorporate in my future classically current designs.

Mother’s Day: A Fresh Perspective

With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, I want to wish a happy (early) Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms out there. As a working mom of two young twin girls, I know very well how long, crazy and chaotic the days and nights can be and can attest that the one day a year dedicated just to us is very well deserved! However, this doesn’t mean that we expect an elaborate celebration on our special day. In fact, it’s often the smallest gestures of appreciation that truly mean the most.

With simplicity in mind, here are a couple of quick interior design upgrades you can implement around the house to spruce things up and give Mom the royal treatment she deserves this Mother’s Day!
