A fun and challenging project of ours was to design a contemporary and playful Houston pied-a-terre in just 8 weeks (including a renovated kitchen) for a Connecticut-based client. The client’s main request was the installation of white, lacquered floors (over maple) throughout the entire space and the addition of pops of primary color. It is not every day you are asked to execute a lacquered floor. But that’s why we love our clients: they are all such risk takers!
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The time-frame was an important factor for this project. The young couple tapped us to design their high-rise home in a very short amount of time. Starting with the clean-lined, Poggenpohl, kitchen with crazy-fun LED backsplash, the white lacquer floors and custom furnishings, completed a contemporary and unexpected retreat in just 2 months.
The coffee table offers a fabulous opportunity for bold color. The Lucite table with powdered pigment to give it the red appearance is by Venice, California based Elizabeth Paige Smith ().
Color was the main focus of this design. The white backdrop was implemented to contrast the bold colors, fine art, and graphic prints. The client is an avid contemporary art collector and we drew our color scheme from their acquisitions. Colorful, woven fabrics in the main living space are a nice foil to the serene master and guest bedrooms.
Notice how the all-white lacquer floor allows the bold colors of Patti Kelly’s artwork to be center stage in the gallery-style foyer.
Texture was another important facet to this interior design. Various textures create interest in the overall white ground. For example, we ed Austin, Texas native, Kyle Bunting, to design the hair-on-hide carpet in the living room. We also found a very h faux-lawn product for the terrace.
A colorful, custom, mitered stripe pillow is placed on this covered chaise as the perfect garnish to the patio. It’s all about details!
This interior was a great opportunity for us to challenge ourselves to meet a short deadline and impress a very fashion-forward and design savvy homeowner. We are just as pleased as the clients with the finished result!
