The Perfect Kitchen

Full disclosure: I am certainly not an expert chef… Honestly, cooking kind of freaks me out! That said, what I lack in culinary know-how, I make up for in my love for designing the perfect spaces for others to create delicious masterpieces! In my classically current designs, I love creating a space where laughter and memories happen. From bubbly brunches to Sunday dinners, weekend celebrations and even homework time, the kitchen easily becomes one of the most central places to gather in a home – making it one of the most important spaces.

Throughout a kitchen’s interior design process, functionality and livability need to coexist with fabulous style. Here are my top priorities when designing the kitchen of your dreams.

By Tara Scott-Johnson,

No matter the size of your home, clutter can quickly consume your space and leave you feeling a little claustrophobic. Out of necessity, and small spaces dwellers have learned how to rid themselves of unnecessary clutter. Let’s take our from the folks that know square footage comes at a premium and every inch of space should be utilized in a creative way – the professional organizer.

The professional organizer has mastered the art of decluttering homes with this simple process. Starting with three boxes marked SAVE, DONATE, and TRASH, go through each room meticulously and purge the space. The goal is to have less items in the SAVE box once the purging process is complete. This process not only declutters your space, it declutters your soul.

The -based Professional Organizer, , tells Chron, “ is your friend!” Reeves stocks his own home with boxes, trays, and other receptacles to hold and store just about everything. Most storage containers can be stored in closets and under beds. But, some containers are decorative enough to sit on bookcases,  open shelving, or stacked on the floor.

Trend Watch: Boho Chic

First, the truth: I hesitate to comment very often on interior design trends. While I love the newest of the new, my classically current design philosophy shies away from incorporating “trendy” pieces into my interiors simply for trend’s sake.  Above all, interiors should be timeless, fine, comfortable, and a representation of the real you! For many reasons, I abhor disposable design and never purchase an item for myself that I don’t absolutely love and see being part of my life forever. All that said, there is one look that is currently trending that I am totally over the top about right now: Boho Chic.

This look is a natural progression of the Scandinavian Modern look that was all the rage last year and is still super hot. I have my eye on Boho right now because I am working on a fabulous interior design project in Houston’s Highland Village neighborhood. Our client loves contemporary style and asked us to soften the space with the natural, handmade elements of which the Boho look is known. Alongside the uber-talented Dbh-biz.info designers, , principal designer, and , interior designer, I have collected the BEST of the Boho Chic trend.

These are pieces that are bench-made by artisans, lovingly and thoughtfully crafted, and will have longevity and relevance long after this look reaches a fever pitch.

Sweet Summer Style: Blackberry Farm Inspiration

They say summer is the time for a little rest and relaxation, and I couldn’t agree more. Although you can usually find me in the studio working with to create fab classically current interiors for our clients, I’ve already daydreamed my way through two summer-inspired style boards this season (you can find them and ). This week, I couldn’t help but gather my latest inspirations into one more summer-filled style board! For this design, I was inspired by one of my favorite summer destinations, .

For those unfamiliar with this sweet summer escape located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, Blackberry Farm serves as a luxurious, rustic getaway for anyone looking to leave the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the great outdoors with a glass of wine from a local vineyard in hand- two of my favorite things!

See how I created a classic farm look to bring this quaint, southern charm into an interior design.

How to Layer Pattern like a Pro!

When it comes to the , patterns are a huge priority for me to create a unique and dynamic space.  While I often stick with a sophisticated mix of solid fabrics in in a home, mixing patterns can be challenging and fun, and will elevate the overall aesthetic of a room. Doing this the “right” way can be the hallmark of a professional interior designer or decorator. Here are my top three guidelines that I personally subscribe to when layering pattern on pattern on pattern!

Layer on the Texture!

Bringing a richly layered room to life requires each individual element to stand on its own and to blend together with the rest of the space. This is a fun and challenging task and why I love my job as an interior designer! In addition to incorporating color and pattern, multitudes of texture are an integral part of any interior design. From walls and ceilings to creative uses of natural elements, the possibilities to add texture to a room are endless!
