Inspired Everywhere: Austin

From the of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona to the in my hometown of Houston, design inspiration is all around us. This is especially true in the eclectic capital of the Lone Star State!

A quick drive from Houston, Austin is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway and a dose of whimsical inspiration. On a recent trip with my husband, Michael, we hit some of our favorite spots and discovered some new places where we are sure to return.

In a city full of unique charm and plenty to see, here are some of the places I was inspired in Austin.

Your Guide to the Amazing Drape

It is no secret that I am a BIG fan of drapery! My clients will tell you that they have had many a creative discussion about their need for window treatments and, specifically, beautiful, flowing, airy, drapery. From major statement drapery to quiet, more supporting elements, window coverings play a major role in the interior design of a room.

I have often had a homeowner say they are not interested in drapes or they fear blocking a beautiful view with fabric. My response: drapes have a powerful impact on the overall design of a room and, depending on the vision for the design, can either be a mere softening element or take center stage. With a handsome tie-back, they will never detract from your view. To use drapes to their full potential, here are a few factors to keep in mind.

Summer Destination Inspiration: Carmel-by-the-Sea

Traveling is one of my favorite pastimes.  I take every chance I get to explore new places and I often find myself daydreaming of the vacation spots that I’ve either visited in the past or hope to in the future. Of course, this daydreaming quickly turns into and that’s what I truly relish about travel!

In the spirit of the summer travel season, I decided to pull interior design inspiration from some of my favorite vacation destinations to create style boards that reflect the qualities of these amazing places!

First up, the charming beach town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. As the temperatures quickly rise in Houston, my mind often drifts to Carmel’s sandy beaches and cool blue oceans. In a town this idyllic, there is far too much inspiration for one board so all of my ideas became two separate projects, each with their own unique style and highlighting my favorite aspects of this quaint vacation spot!

Vibrant and Fun

I gravitated toward lighter and brighter hues for this theme and turned my Classically Current style into a timeless interior fit for any ocean-front property. These colors work well to create a fun space for entertaining guests inside and outdoors. Because of the gorgeous climate, most residents of Carmel live inside and out year round!

Dbh-biz.info in Aspen, Colorado: A Renovation Story

Following on from our recent post about our new crush on Mountain Modern design (found ) we’ve recently completed the renovation of a wonderful mountain vacation home, just fifteen minutes from downtown Aspen, Colorado.

Located right on the Roaring Fork River, the homeowners asked our team, comprised of Senior Designer Letecia Ellis and Associate Designer Kirstin Tate (and me!) to create a comfortable and cozy interior with a strong sense of place.

Our goal for the living room was to blend contemporary and rustic design with plenty of texture to create a luxurious yet casual space. The result is a relaxing area that maximizes the brilliant sunshine of the Rocky Mountains. The feel of the room is rustic, yet refined: this is a lovely spot to watch the river!
