The holiday season is such a special time of year! I hope your holiday is filled with delicious food and good cheer. If your family is like me, you have some fun – and maybe quirky – holiday traditions. Whether you enjoy the light shows, plays, festivals, decorating, baking, going to see the Nutcracker, gathering for a family dinner, taking a trip or selecting the perfect gift for everyone on your list, there’s so much to look forward to.
Today, the Dbh-biz.info team is dishing on the details of their favorite holiday traditions and what they look forward to most this time of year.
“I always look forward to seeing all my family in West Texas. On Christmas Eve, my dad and I make eggnog together from a family recipe passed on from my grandfather. Also, I’m a Christmas baby, so Christmas Day is a big celebration day that we always kick off with a fabulous birthday brunch.”
– Shannon Smith, Senior Interior Designer
“My family always goes to my parents’ house. We put on my dad’s old holiday and Beatles records and decorate the Christmas tree. My parents still have the homemade ornaments from our elementary school days and they get one every time we travel, so unwrapping them is a fun reminder of the places we have been…all while we are sipping eggnog of course!”
– Lexi Fink, Associate Designer
“One of my favorite things to do in the winter is to sit by a fire and relax all snuggled up and warm! Some of my favorite traditions growing up are baking Christmas goodies with my mom. We would bake a ton of treats and make goodie bags for neighbors, friends, and family. On Christmas Eve our family would drive around and look at lights, come home and read The Night Before Christmas together and leave Santa cookies and a coke. (But not milk because the milk would go sour! Haha)
Into my adult years, I’ve carried on our baking tradition, but don’t even come close to how much my mom would make. My husband and I still take a drive to look at the lights on Christmas Eve. I’ve always wanted to see the Nutcracker ballet, so I think I will treat myself to that this year!”
-Shenay Keyes, Lead Interior Designer
“My favorite thing to do for the holidays is travel! My sister’s birthday is right before Christmas, so as a part of her gift we pick a place to visit. Last year, we went to Denver, Colorado and this year we’re headed to Las Vegas!!!”
– Letecia Ellis Haywood, Principle Interior Designer
“Every Christmas Eve, my whole family goes to a Christmas Eve candlelight service at the church I grew up in and afterwards we watch Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, while drinking my dad’s homemade wassail.”
– Blair Foster, Lead Interior Designer
“My family heads to our ranch (near Austin) and, depending on the weather, we go fishing, take leisurely strolls, and pile up next to the fire pit while the kids roast marshmallows. Over the last few years, the adults in the fam (and I use the term ‘adult’ loosely) have a new tradition that we like to call “Schloggin and Noggin”. This basically means that we drink Gold Schlagger (not at all elegant) and Egg Nog (this I prefer). My husband created some super fancy T-Shirts to commemorate our Schloggin’ so we will all don these along with the pajama pants my sister gives everyone each year.
We also enjoy a lovely rib roast and spiced wine on Christmas Eve, so our holiday runs the gamut!”
